A Deep Dive: Taiwan’s Future Submarine Program

On Dec. 1, the Washington-based Project 2049 Institute sponsored a conference, “A Deep Dive: Taiwan’s Future Submarine Program.”

The ROC’s de facto military attaché Rear Adm. David T.W. Yang was invited to give a keynote speech at the event.

Yang told the audience that the two Guppy-class submarines should be replaced and the Dutch-built Zwaardvis-class subs “urgently” need to be refurbished.

He added that the island is proceeding with a dual-track FMS-plus-Indigenous Defense Submarine (IDS) program while it waits for a clear answer from the U.S. government on how to proceed with the FMS package of eight diesel-electric submarines.
